Overlap free joining of textile products

Textiles are currently joined with an overlap. This causes a thick place in the product, which leads to inhomogeneous component characteristics. Webs joined this way can usually not be deflected, transported and coiled over rollers without being damaged, Joining areas of overlapped joined textiles show inhomogeneities according to optical characteristics, surface feel and impermeability. The joints also reduce the wearing comfort and the elbowroom of for instance protective clothing. So far a realizable textile joining method has not been developed, which provides homogeneous component characteristics with sufficient seam resistance.

The Intention of this research project is the development of a technology for stepless joining of textile semi-finished parts without overlapping. In the course of this re-search project a laser-welding-installation with a handling system is developed and built for an overlap free, continuous joining of 2D-textiles. Laser welding features precise heat transmission into the textile. Furthermore reproducibility of joints, automation of the process and process safety are advantages of laser welding.

This project is supported by the Arbeitsgemeinschaft industrieller Forschungsvereinigungen „Otto von Guericke" e.V. (AiF).
